Tennis as a Corporate Team-Building Activity in Singapore

Why tennis works as a corporate team-building activity, and what HR and event organisers should know before booking one.

Corporate team-building in Singapore tends to cycle through the same handful of activities: escape rooms, cooking classes, the occasional trust fall exercise dressed up in newer language. Tennis is rarely on the shortlist, usually because organisers assume it requires everyone to already know how to play. Run properly, it doesn’t, and it produces something most indoor activities can’t: colleagues actually competing and laughing together on a court, not sitting in a room following instructions.

Why tennis specifically works for mixed groups

Most offices have a genuine spread of playing ability, a few keen weekend players, a larger group who’ve played casually, and people who’ve never picked up a racket. A doubles-first format handles this well, because doubles rewards communication and positioning more than raw skill, so a strong player paired with a first-timer can still have a competitive, enjoyable game. That’s harder to engineer in most sports.

The three formats companies actually book

Corporate clinics work as a standalone activity for a group that’s mostly or entirely new to tennis, a guided, beginner-friendly introduction rather than a competitive session. Team-building sessions are the doubles-first format described above, built specifically for a mixed-level group. Company tournaments are for teams who want a genuinely competitive afternoon with a bracket, scoring, and a result at the end.

What organisers get wrong when booking through a generic vendor

The most common mistake is booking a format that assumes more playing experience than the group actually has. A vendor managing dozens of activity types rarely has the specific knowledge to flag this. A coach running the session directly can ask the right questions upfront: how many people have played before, is this a wellness activity or a genuinely competitive one, and does the venue actually have enough courts for the headcount.

Venue and timing, briefly

Sessions can run at an office’s own facilities if there’s a court, or at a nearby public or club court arranged in advance. Ninety minutes is typical for a clinic, tournaments need a half-day for anywhere from sixteen to thirty-two players across two or three courts.

If you’re planning something for your company, the three formats above each have their own page with more detail, corporate clinics, team-building sessions, and company tournaments, or message directly with your headcount and rough dates for a specific recommendation.
