An inconsistent forehand is the single most common complaint from intermediate players, and it’s rarely caused by what people assume. Here are the actual usual suspects, roughly in order of how often they show up.
Late preparation, not a bad swing
Most inconsistent forehands aren’t mechanically broken, they’re late. The racket isn’t back in time, so the player rushes the forward swing to compensate, which is what actually causes the mishits and unpredictable direction. This shows up more under time pressure, which is exactly when a match needs the shot most.
Contact point drift
Watch a shaky forehand over several shots and the contact point usually moves around, sometimes too far in front, sometimes too close to the body. A consistent contact point, more than any other single factor, is what makes a forehand repeatable rather than a coin flip.
Overcorrecting after a miss
A miss long often gets followed by an exaggerated attempt to hit it shorter, which tends to produce a miss into the net, then an overcorrection back the other way. This pattern compounds itself within a single rally or game and is a habit, not a technical flaw, worth noticing on its own.
Grip changes mid-match without noticing
Some players unconsciously shift their grip slightly between a relaxed rally and a pressured point, which changes the racket face angle at contact without any change in swing path. This one is genuinely hard to self-diagnose, since it happens outside conscious attention, and is a good example of where a coach watching from the side sees something a player physically cannot feel from inside the shot.
What actually fixes it
Isolated repetition of the specific failure point, not more general hitting. If preparation timing is the issue, drilling early split-step and early racket takeback specifically, in a low-pressure setting, then gradually adding pace and pressure, works faster than playing more casual sets and hoping it resolves itself.
